Brighouse Sports Ladies bowed out of the FA Cup 4-1 despite putting up a superb performance against a bang in form Hull City side who sit top of the table above.
Brighouse were on the back foot for long spells, but great work from the back four of Paige Green, Charlotte Reid, Sheridan Drake, and Leanne Webster meant that keeper Linzi Scarfe had little to do.
Brighouse had a couple of decent chances, the best falling to Chelsea Jessop, but her shot from outside the area just flashed wide.
However, Brighouse were playing their first competitive match of the season compared to Hull’s sixth, and legs began to tire after Hull took the lead. Three minutes later it was 2-0, and just on half time it was three when Brighouse lost the ball in the centre circle and Hull broke quickly to score a simple goal.
Brighouse showed great heart and ability after the break despite havifg used their only substitute in the first half when Alex Sweeney replaced the injured Vanessa Holroyd.
Leanne Smith, Lauren Doyle, Sarah Hemingway Emily Holroyd and Sweeney began to get hold of the ball in midfield, and Smith was finding more space on the right. After 55 minutes she tried a speculative long ball to Holroyd which was half cleared, but Smith was quick onto the loose ball and played a sublime through ball to Jessop who raced into the box and smartly slotted into the bottom corner.
Brighouse continued to frustrate Hull and Reid got an important touch on a cross, as did Webster, but the scoring was finished in the 71st minute when a loose ball from a corner was lashed into the net.
Smith had a half chance late on, but ended up being crowded out.
“Against this quality of opposition I thought the ladies put up a fantastic fight, worked so hard, and stuck to the game plan despite a lack of numbers and one or two playing out of position,” said boss Richard Money.
On Sunday Brighouse Sports are at home to Brighouse Sports Reserves in the League Cup at Hipperholme and Lightcliffe High School (1.30).
