BRIGHOUSE seconds are through to the next round of the Priestley Shield after beating high-flying Saltaire.
Nigel Elkin and skipper Chris Maloney got off to a flying start hitting 30 before Elkin was bowled. The skipper’s brother, David then retired hurt with a suspected broken thumb.
John Potkins made 16 before being lbw and wicketkeeper Scott Nixon made 20 while Maloney reached his half century in 50 balls.
David Maloney returned to join this brother as Chris hit his second century of the season finally falling on 178.
Mark Jeffery hit a quickfire 18 and Brighouse finished on 332 for six.
The rain delayed Saltaire’s reply by 10 minutes.
David Maloney and Kamran Khan bowled excellent line and length putting Saltaire under pressure.
Brighouse soon had taken two wickets, one of which was an exceptional run out by Gary Wilkinson.
The run rate was mounting and the tension was tangible and, with all the Brighouse bowlers on top of their game, it made it very difficult for the visitors to get anywhere near the target and they finished 118 runs short.
Brighouse now look forward to an away fixture at Baildon in the next round on Monday, May 30.
