Defence wins it for Birkenshaw

Wyke 6

Birkenshaw 18

Bradford and District ARL Cup round one

Wyke kicked off the first half playing downhill and soon put the visitors on the back foot with some strong defensive work from men of the match Aidy Doherty and Simon Owen.

They also drove in the ball well, with second-rower Ashley Hutchinson and Sean Kelly showing the way forward.

It wasn’t until the 30th minute that a point was notched and, unfortunately, it went to the visiting team.

Wyke conceded a penalty under their own posts and from the resulting tap, they allowed ex-Wyke product Shaun Godfrey to go in under the posts for an easy score, which was converted.

Wyke went on the attack seeking to even up the scores before half time.

After some excellent driving from the forwards, the ball was moved through the hands to wingman Mark Teale.

He gathered the ball, stepped inside his opposite number, again another ex-Wyke player in Alan Binns, and scored to the right of the sticks. Michael Wormald added the extras to level the scores at the break.

The second half began very similar to the first, with neither side giving an inch of territory. Again Wyke drove and tackled well, but Birkenshaw also showed their muscle in the game.

Birkenshaw were first over the line thanks to their half backs, keeping the ball alive as they shipped it out along the line and scored close to the corner flag. The conversion was again added.

Wyke continued to push forward seeking another score, but they could not find a hole in the defence of the Birkenshaw outfit.

Despite Wyke having the lion’s share of possession, it was Birkenshaw who scored another try to put the game out of sight for the home side.

Wyke switch their sights back to league action on Saturday when they entertain Doncaster Tool Bar at Worthing Head Road (2.00).
