IT might be fast approaching midsummer – but winter sports are always on Luke Thornton's mind.
The Brighouse 10-year-old recorded one of his biggest successes when he collected the Under-10s title in the Yorkshire Ski Federation's county championships held at Xscape, Castleford.

He contested the slalom and giant slalom events against the cream of the county's skiers and swept to victory.

Younger brother Adam, aged just four, came sixth in the Under-Six event.

Both boys, who attend Woodhouse Primary School, are enthusiastic skiers and are tipped to go on to bigger things.

Luke started skiing at the age of five and all the family – dad Neil and mum Lesley included – are members of the Lions' Ski Club at Xscape.

In March Luke represented his school at the British Inter-School Challenge in Les Houches, France, and has already picked up a second and a fourth place in the current Xscape race series. The next round of the competition is at Chill Factor in Manchester this weekend.

He is sponsored by local recruitment group Quantica where dad works. "Luke has really taken to the sport and Adam is following in his footsteps," said Neil.
