AT the start of the 2009-10 season the newly formed Whitehall Warriors ARLFC set out a goal of being competitive in their first season in the Pennine Amateur Rugby League Division Five and, as the Christmas decorations are being put away, the Warriors are so far doing just that.
Under the new coaching duo of Paul Johnson and Stuart Syme, the Warriors have made steady progress throughout the opening half of the season and sit directly in mid table and are looking up rather than looking down.
The Warriors formed again after club captain Alex Scargill refused to let them die along and with help from David Beaumont and dedicated sponsors such as John Crossley they all worked together to re-ignite the interest in the Warriors.
On the field the Warriors are made up of many new players who are keen to learn the game, such as full back Luke Sagar who had never played the game before, and after just a few games looks like he has played all his life.
Older heads such as Tony Power and the two coaches Johnson and Syme have been joined by rugby union converts such as Terry Thacker, Eddie Szyzac and Mark Bolger who have all impressed in their first season as league players.
The season was a serious eye opener for the new breed of Warriors as they were thumped by a classy Woodhouse outfit who look real title contenders and came up against a strong Queensbury team that was full of experience. However, the new boys finally got off the mark with an away win at Halifax Irish.
That result kick started the Warriors and a run of good results catapulted them up the table to where they are now, and after a few struggles with injuries are still playing good open rugby and improving week on week.
Notable performances from Mark Bolger, Luke Sagar and centre Rhys Brown making the Warriors tick.
Over the Christmas period the Warriors have made two new signings in ex-Brighouse Rangers Baz Stead, who can play in the pack or at half back, and re-signed block busting prop forward Richard Casanove who was formerly with Siddal, which should give the Warriors extra fire power to kick on for the second half of the season both on and off the field.
Anyone wishing to join the Whitehall Warriors they train at Brighouse High School gymnasium on Monday nights 8-9pm and then Hipperholme and Lightcliffe High school on Friday nights 8-9pm, or call David Beaumont on 07850707443.
