A 14-year-old Brighouse High School rugby league player, described by his coach as "an exceptional talent and an eyecatcher" is attracting the attention of professional clubs.
Former professional Arnie Hema, coach to the Brighouse Rangers under-15s, says Ben Drennan is the complete package and he certainly punches above his weight.

"His heart is as big as his body," Hema said.

"He will go far in this game and I have already told Bradford Bulls, Leeds Rhinos and Wakefield Wildcats to come and take a look at him for he deserves the chance to forge a Super League career when he leaves school."

Diminutive Ben is Rangers' answer to England and Leeds Rhinos scrum-half Robbie Burrow. He is at present 5ft 4ins and weighs 8st 8lbs and would probably be more suitable to being a jockey than a prominent play maker in the tough old sport of rugby league.

The year 11 student, son of Danny Drennan and his wife Liz, switched from being a talented soccer player with Leeds United's shadow squad at their Thorpe Arch Academy and with Clifton Rangers to the handling game.

"I was playing rugby league at school and liked it and then went down to Rangers with my mates Lewis Ives and Ben Garwood," he revealed.

Now they don't have a rugby team at Brighouse High so his football is with the school team and his rugby comes with Tuesday and Thursday training sessions at Brighouse Sports Club and matches in the West Riding Junior League on a Sunday morning.

This is when mum and dad and his 10-year-old sister Hannah turn out to cheer him and his teammates on.

Hema started him off as a hooker but he has made the transition to feeding the scrum in great style.

Last week the whole club had a visit from Bradford Bulls and his team had specialist training and coaching from Dave Halley and the Burgess twins – George and Tom.

School pal Oliver Roberts, 14, has signed for Salford City Reds on schoolboy forms, and Ben's cousin Joe Harbisher, is a flanker in the other code with the Wakefield school, Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, recogised down the years as a stronghold for nurturing rugby union talent.

Ben, who is studying Physical Education as a GCSE subject, says he would love to make it as a Super League player and has been watching both the Giants and the Rhinos to pick up more tips along the way from the likes of Luke Robinson and Burrow.
