TWO key days in the context of the Brighouse SFL season changed the direction of the campaign.
TWO key days in the context of the Brighouse SFL season changed the direction of the campaign.
Junction were already in an almost unassailable position at the top – but the expected resignation of Team Forward handed the Rastrick side the title the
y won last year.
With the top spot in the bag, it now remains down to the remaining days of the season to decide the order of merit for those still jostling for position.
Martins Nest currently hold the runners up spot following an excellent 2009 after picking up a point on Sunday against fellow form side Eastfield.
Dan Greenwood, Damian McCallum, Jacob Driver and a belter from Chris Payne saw Nest register four in a vastly entertaining encounter far from the usual end of season fayre, but 'Field shared the spoils thanks in large to a great strike from Craig Gabbitas. A Brad Wormald double and an own goal completed Eastfield's scoring – but Gabbitas' effort from range was the pick.
Old Pond had a rollercoaster 6-3 win against Triangle on Sunday. A first half blitz was enough to see the Hove Edge side pick up the three points, though 'Angle's young side punished the visitors for taking their foot off the gas in the second period.
Anthony Todd opened the scoring for Pond following Glen Hall's burst through midfield and Paul Taylor's centre, before player-manager Richard Dawson thumped home a header following a good run and delivery from Bob Priestley.
Dawson turned provider with a defence splitting pass, allowing Taylor to force home after Jason Kirby's first effort was saved. It didn't take long for Kirby to find the net however – he struck a bobbling shot from the edge of the area that evaded the Triangle No.1.
A cultured George Brown punt saw Todd cross to allow Kirby his second, before keeper Holmes went route one and Taylor expertly volleyed home his second.
'Angle made a spirited comeback in the second half, Ben Brown scoring from the spot before Ross Charlesworth thumped home the goal of the game. Brown tapped home his second to cap a good second half for the home side.
Brighouse Sports staged a dramatic comeback against Sun Inn as a second match of the day finished four apiece, this time at Field Lane.
Meanwhile, the bottom two sides met at Carr Green and it was Top Club who came out victorious against Rastrick C & AC.
l Old Pond now know they will need to see off Brighouse Sports on Sunday, following the defeat by Echo Cup finalists Eastfield, if they are to secure second spot in the final league standings.
'Field adapted much the better in the first half and took the lead through Jerry Madunigky who had a good game up top for the home side.
Joe Shaw then added a brace, the second a close range header as his side looked home and dry at half time.
Pond started well in the second period showing good spirit and their man of the match Micheal Barlow grabbed a deserved goal having muscled through before side footing home. Jason Kirby pulled another back latching onto an error but ultimately a penalty to Eastfield gave the home side the breathing space they needed to collect the three points. Chris Hill fired home from the spot to continue his sides good preperation for the Cup Final appointment.
Fixtures for Sunday (10.30): Old Pond v Brighouse Sports, Lane Head No1; Pack Horse v Triangle, Savile Park No1; Rastrick C&AC v Eastfield, Carr Green Rec.
