THERE were two five-star performances in the Brighouse SFL at the weekend, as both Junction's Robert Malone and Rastrick CC striker Ben Charlesworth netted five in comfortable victories for their respective sides.
Junction held on to their position at the pinnacle of the league after a seven-goal defeat of bottom side Triangle. It was a 2-1 defeat in the reverse fixture earlier in the season but Tiangle less fortunate on this occasion as Malone registered his impressive goals haul.
The former Brighouse Town man, currently playing on a Saturday with Halifax Irish, now tops the Brighouse SFL's leading marksman charts with 18 despite playing out wide for much of the season.
Junction's 7-0 victory was capped by goals from midfield man Chris Dunne and front runner Anthony Hemingway.
Charlesworth is a recent signing for Rastrick CC, having joined from Brighouse Sports where he picked up a league and cup double last season.
His five goals came in a match opposing manager Kevin O'Brien was keen to forget as his Mellors side shipped 11 goals without reply.
Jason Tiplady, John Shacklock, Chris Wdowczyk, Paul Askham, Lee Shirtliffe and an own goal completed a comfortable rout for CC. Thornhill Briggs consider any mention of lifting the title as a bit of a jinx, but went a long way to keeping the pressure on Junction with a 2-1 victory away at third-placed Sun Inn.
Lee Nicholson netted for the Rastrick side, but Josh Smith and current Brighouse SFL Player of the Year Joe Shaw secured an invaluable maximum poin's haul.
At Lane Head Eastfield showed their recent form has taken an upturn, but lost 4-3 to home side Martins Nest. Field took the lead through Brad Wormald, but Nest upped their game to move into a commanding lead.
Dan Reddy fired home a penalty to level, before Shaun Kirby put his side ahead. Andrew Lumb struck the crossbar as the home side pressed. James Waddington saved impressively, but then Lumb was in the right place to tap home a parry.
In the second period Kirby put Nest 4-1 into the lead with a well judged lob. Eastfield battled back and Richard Beaumont scored a penalty spot. Craig Gabbitas charged down a Nest clearance and there was a bizarre goal as the ball looped into the Nest net. It left Field in ninth place and Nest mid table in sixth.
The remaining scheduled match between Brighouse Sports and Old Pond was postponed due to water logging at the Russell Way ground.
