WHEN the going gets tough, Karl Gray gets going - and the tougher the better.
The Brighouse fell runner relished the blustery, chilly conditions on Saturday to win the 13th Ovenden Fell Race in a time of 57 minutes 29 seconds.
"It was very windy, slippery and cold but I seem to do better when I'm up against those sort of cond
itions. It was competitive field and a good event," said the 38-year-old physiotherapist of Slead Syke.
The eight-mile winter challenge, run over boggy moorland near the Ovenden Moor windfarm, attracted a field of almost 140 competitors.
Karl beat fellow Calder Valley Fell Runners Shaun Godsman, Adam Breaks and Jason Stevens into second, third and fifth place with Richard Pattinson of Pudsey and Bramley taking third place. Last January Karl took second place in the same event.
"Considering the conditions I was pleased with my time," said Karl. "It seemed that I was running into the wind whichever direction I took!"
Karl is now considering taking part in the Wadsworth Trog Fell Race in February and is also busy preparing for the English Championships season. He will compete in the Three Peaks event and Black Combe Fell race in the Lake District in March.
One of the best fell runners in the country, Karl, a former amateur footballer, has competed at numerous events over the past few years. He lives with his wife Helen and 21-month-old daughter Sadie at Maurice Avenue.
"I enjoy the camaraderie of fell running. Though it is a competitive sport, all the runners know each other and are very supportive."
