A former Brighouse Gala Queen has died at the age of 88.

Catherine Joyce Rushton (nee Barwick), known to many by her middle name, was born in Southowram before getting married in 1951 when she became Joyce Learoyd. In 1954 she moved to Gooder Lane in Rastrick.

She divorced and in 1977 married George Rushton who she lived with in Clifton Common, she moved to Elland in 1989.

Joyce worked at A. H Leach in Brighouse as a dark room photographer and in a cafe in Commercial Street, Brighouse, and was involved with Brighouse Salvation Army. Both of her sons Philip and Roger played in their band.

She also had three other children Lynda, Roland and Helen and when she married George she adopted Peter, Michael and Elizabeth. She was a grandma and great grandma.

Her funeral was held at St Anne’s Church in Southowram conducted by Rev Guy Jamieson.

“She was very broad minded and had a wicked sense of humour. She always wanted Guy to do her funeral and used to say I want Anton De Beck to do it, as she used to say he looked like him,” said the family.

It was held on September 25 and she was buried in the grave with her parents Annie and Leonard.
