SHOPPERS in Calderdale have named a Brighouse independent business as the best in the district.

Czerwik’s wine and cheese shop in Commercial Street, Brighouse, has triumphed in the people’s choice award at the first ever Totally Locally Awards.

They were judged together along with four other shops across Calderdale from an online public vote and came out on top as the people’s favourite.

They also picked up the Most Talked About Award, along with the Yorkshire Soap Company in Hebden Bridge. The award is for those shops and businesses that are consistently mentioned and that most people would like to have in their town – the real stand out stars in the area.

Manager John Murphy from Czerwik’s said it was great news for Brighouse and they were very pleased to have received the award.

“We were very excited and obviously very grateful for the award. It’s nice to be recognised and we got some good comments back from the judges.

“I think it’s through word of mouth about the quality we have here that people throughout Calderdale have voted for us. It’s also great that a Brighouse shop has won as there a lot of very good independent shops in the town.”

Lesely Adams, from Simply Flowers, was awarded a Totally Local Hero honour which is presented to individuals who have given up their time and effort to make Calderdale and their town that little bit better, and have helped the Totally Locally campaign from the start.

“I was very surprised to win the award,” she said. “All the work has been worth it as at the end of the day it’s all about getting people to come into Brighouse and for people to shop locally.”

The awards ceremony was held at The Works in Sowerby Bridge with a crowd of over 250 people to see awards given to shops and cafes voted for by the people of Calderdale.

The event was hosted by Nigel Goddard and Chris Sands, of Totally Locally, with speakers including Councillor Barry Collins representing Calderdale Council, which funded the initial start-up of Totally Locally and The Mayor of Calderdale Councillor Dr Nader Fekri JP.
