BRIGHOUSE and Rastrick Band’s autumn spectacular at Huddersfield Town Hall on October 29 will be spearheaded by Dr Chris Davis, OBE, returning by popular demand following his memorable first visit two years ago.

Resplendent in full military dress on that occasion, he had just retired from his position as Principal Director of Music, Royal Marines Band, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Such was the impression made in 2009 with both audience and musicians alike that he was eagerly invited again on the first suitable date and to submit his own theme for consideration by the B. & R. management.

Visions of music on a European journey evolved and these thoughts have now been captioned ‘A Venture into Europe’.

Dr Davis had no qualms about the quality of players he would be leading as the hosts are current Yorkshire and National Champions and their guests, the Fodens Band, is one of the best the north west has ever produced.

They were Thameside champions at this year’s Whit Friday March contest, matching B. & R.’s victory in nearby Saddleworth, and were runners-up in the recent English National contest in Preston, just one place above B. & R.

They have been one of the UK’s most consistent elite bands for a long time.

Both bands are currently hard at work preparing for the prestigious British Open competition at the Symphony Hall, Birmingham on September 3 and a month later will be following similarly challenging weeks before heading for the Royal Albert Hall, London on October 14 where B. & R. will be defending their proud ‘National Champions’ title.

From there, thoughts turn to Huddersfield in much lighter mode with the combined bands determined to entertain.

The music should make that easy with classic marches including ‘Marche Lorraine’ and ‘The Cossack’ alongside the ever popular Armenian Fire Dance and many other selections from Sweden, Norway, Spain and beyond

It should prove to be a memorable occasion and tickets are first on general sale locally by band personnel at Fawcett Thornton’s, Commercial St. Brighouse on Saturday, September 10 (10am. to noon only).

From September 14 they are available from all Kirklees outlets (Tel. 01484 223200) or by viewing the Kirklees or B. & R. websites.
