A MAJOR racing spectacle that brought thousands of people to the town is gearing up for the big event.
The streets of Brighouse town centre will get the chance to see the country’s top cyclists make an exciting return for the 2012 Elite Circuit Race series.
Despite being missing from the calendar for the past two years, British Cycling have confirmed that the VS Cycles Brighouse circuit race will be held on Tuesday June 26.
Now, for race organiser Chris Vokes, along with Mick Lever and Paul Waddington, at VS Cycles on Bradford Road, who organised the highly successful events between 2007 and 2009, the hard work really begins.
“We have had a lot of interest from businesses and people asking when the race would be returning,” he said. “Economic times are hard but there are people looking to get involved and support it.
“All the riders are looking forward to returning and they have been backing us to get the race back.
“It’s something I always wanted to do and put something back into the sport.”
Mr Vokes said that professional riders Russell and Dean Downing, and Tom Murray, a former racer at VS cycles, have been supporting the bid to get the popular race back.
It is also hoped that Eurosport commentator Mike Smith will be returning to conduct the proceedings with a full field of professional riders and teams expected to compete.
In 2010, the event had to be cancelled as a rival town centre series was set up under the name Tour Series which left Brighouse unable to find a suitable date.
In 2009, when the last circuit event was held, thousands of people lined the streets for the racing spectacle despite the torrential downpours and proving what a popular and well supported event it was.
The track will again be based on a route from King Street, along Lawson Road, Bethel Street, Thornton Square and Briggate, before turning back into Commercial Street and reaching the finishing tape at the junction of Bradford Road and King Street.
