THE Chinese State Circus is set to return to Calderdale with a new show that promises to be one of the highlights of the season at the Victoria Theatre, Halifax.
The incomparable company is now on a 53-date theatre tour with ‘Yin Yang’, a new production that combines acrobatic feats and martial arts with elaborate and explosive choreography.
The show arrives at the Victoria Theatre on February 13 and 14 with 30 Chinese artists set to take to the stage in a dazzling display of circus skills.
As well as the more delicate side of the Chinese tradition with plate spinning, parasol juggling, and the eye-catching Lion Dance, there is the Bicycle Act which features 10 performers riding a single bicycle. In addition there is aerial ballet, foot juggling with drums, a contortionist and hoop divers.
Directed by Phillip Gandey, the show features live musicians and the first UK appearance of the formidable Shaolin Master known simply as ‘The One’.
The Chinese State Circus’s visit is part of the new season at the Victoria Theatre which will also bring dancer Brendan Cole’s ‘Licence to Thrill’ show, rock and roll legend Joe Brown, Bradford band Smokie and comedian Milton Jones to the stage.
For fans of classical music there is Puccini’s ‘La Boheme’ and ‘Madam Butterfly’, performed by the Grand Opera of Belarus, and children are certain to be entranced by ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’ in February. Other season highlights include The Hairy Bikers, whose last stage tour was a sell-out two years ago, and Toyah Willcox and Julie Coombe in the comedy sketch show ‘Hormonal Housewives’.
