BRIGHOUSE members of the Lions Ski Club, Castleford, took part in the English Championships 2012, held in Bormio, Italy.

Run by Snowsport England, the competition is one of the biggest in the alpine ski calendar with over 315 entries in the different divisions from Minis One and Two, Children One and Two, and senior with ages from seven and older in male and female categories.

The event was the first race of the season. For some, it was their first race on real snow having previously competed indoors but all were keen to take to the slopes and take on the steeper mountains.

It was a great event for the youngest racer in the championships, Mya Walton.

The St Joseph’s Primary school pupil, taking part in her first alpine event, finished third in her Mini One race.

Adam Thornton from Woodhouse Primary came 8th and 10th in the Mini One races while Maisie Burton, from Old Earth Primary school, Elland, came 10th and 12th in Mini Two.

Kirsten Walton and Luke Thornton from Rastrick High School competed in the Children One and Two categories. Kirsten finished 9th in the slalom, 18th in the giant slalom and 17th in the super giant slalom. Luke came 21st in slalom, 29th in the giant and 35th in the super giant.

Neil Thornton, from the skiing club, said: “The students made great progress in the races considering some of the other entries live and go to school in the ski resorts so they are used to the longer and steeper runs. The performances were fantastic and they are looking forward to the next race.”
