THEY went daft over dahlias and crazy for carrots at Southowram Horticultural and Allotments Society’s 76th annual show.
Though an unusual growing season hampered entries in some categories, there was an excellent turnout for exhibits in most classes with Southowram’s green-fingered gardeners showing off their talents.
Withinfields Primary School in Southowram was filled with displays of vegetables, flowers, handicrafts, cakes and children’s items. The classes for youngsters included categories for a decorated paper plate and hand-made greetings card.
Show secretary Pauline Ackroyd said there had been a good entry for most classes. “People in some of the floral categories struggled this year because of the summer’s weather. One man entering the gladioli category had planted 200 - but only three came out which were suitable for the show,” she said.
“We had a lovely show and it was a very pleasant day. Everyone seemed to enjoy it.”
There were entries in more than 30 classes with trophies awarded for the best exhibits in all sections.
