School strike action

Hundreds of school children will be affected as teachers from the area join the national day of strike action.

Members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ALT) will walk-out tomorrow causing some schools to close or partially be affected.

The action follows the campaign against the Government proposals to significantly alter the Teachers Pension Scheme.

Members plan to take co-ordinated industrial action with other public sector workers, meaning that up to 750,000 staff could strike tomorrow across the UK.

Teachers say the changes would see them paying more, working longer and getting less for their pensions.

More than 40 schools will close across Calderdale while around 20 will only be partially open due to the industrial action, according to council education spokesman Ashley Evans.

Coun Evans (Lib-Dem, Warley) said Calderdale Council was monitoring the situation closely to try and ensure parents had all the available information.

He estimated 38 schools were intending to open as usual while 42 would defiantly closing.

Teachers taking part in the strike action are expected to attend a rally in Halifax tomorrow morning.

A strike by public sector workers is also expected to affect cases at Calderdale Magistrates Court and lead to the closure of Halifax JobCentre.
