Life as a newlywed has been anything but blissful for former Rastrick High School student Tom Walshaw.

The 26-year-old was diagnosed with cancer last year only 12 months after marrying his partner Laura.

He is currently in a California hospital and the costs of his leukaemia treatment are expected to sore well past the £1 million mark.

Tom who used to live in Fixby is not entitled to US benefits, so currently the couple is relying on donations to support their day to day living costs.

Now his family and friends on both sides of the Atlantic have started a fund-raising appeal to help the couple.

A reunion is being planned for May 17 at Rastrick Bowling Club for Tom’s friends and his brother Oliver who also attended Rastrick High as a means of raising funds.

Tom is back at home but is receiving 24-hour care, meaning Laura can’t work.

His great aunt Marcia Kemp said: “Life for Tom and Laura was great they were both about to start careers, Tom was hired out of college to do a manager in training program so they moved from Chico to Rocklin to start his new job and excitedly started looking for their first home.

“Then in July 2012, shortly after being employed permanently, Tom began to feel ill.”

Not long after Tom received the news that he had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, commonly found in children. “He began intense chemotherapy treatments in order to wipe out 99 per cent of his bone marrow leaving him highly susceptible to secondary infections.

“Doctors recommended Tom have a bone marrow transplant which he has had. Tom and Laura are holding up well and his recovery is steady but unfortunately that isn’t their only worry.”

Other events include a sponsored cycle race in July.

“Tom and Laura are a lovely couple and they don’t deserve what they are going through, but even though times are tough they are staying strong for each other and are extremely grateful for all the support they are getting.”
