Proms evening washed out

HEAVY rain forced the cancellation of the sell-out Proms in the Paddock concert at Clifton at the weekend.

Organised by members of St John’s Church, the event has been held in the garden of the Spivey family in Clifton for the past eight years and raises hundreds of pounds for charity.

Church member Pat Ward said: “There was a lake in the centre of the paddock and the sheer weight of the rain overnight on Thursday brought down one of the marquees we had put up earlier that day.

“Obviously safety is a priority and we just felt we had no choice but to cancel the event. We managed to ring round most people who had bought tickets and put someone on the gate on Saturday just in case anyone turned up. In all the years we have held Proms in the Paddock we have usually been very fortunate. This year the weather was unprecendented and our sincere apologies go to all those who were disappointed.”

The event will now be held on Saturday August 25 and all tickets bought for Saturday will be valid for the date. Some tickets have been returned for the new date and are available from Pat on 01484 712355 or Debbie Spivey on 01484 719339.

“We are very grateful to Clifton and Lightcliffe Band, Rachel Crisp, Simply Flowers, Elegance, GJ Tiolet Hire, Universal Live Sound System and Pyro 2000 for making the new date possible though disappointed that Calderdale Council is making us apply for a new licence rather than allow us to transfer the old one.

“The support of our patrons and all the supporters of the event has been overwhelming.”
