Parking issues paramount

Right across Rastrick one of the most prevalent calls for assistance is around parking issues.

Requests for parking restrictions or residents’ parking schemes to be looked into are a regular occurrence. School runs present their own challenges and the fact that we have so many schools in Rastrick is a factor.

That said, I’m aware from ward colleagues that we have many new and long standing requests in Brighouse, Hipperholme and Lightcliffe too.

It costs three to five thousand pounds – mostly in legal costs - to progress the “Traffic Regulation Order” (TRO) necessary to create parking restrictions.

I was pretty staggered to discover that council only allocates a budget of around £25,000 a year for this area of work, to serve the whole borough. It doesn’t take a maths genius to work out why we have a backlog of more than 150 requests, and years of waiting for those affected.

It’s time that this budget reflected the needs and wants of the tax payer.

The good news is that the new Conservative administration at council is determined to make this happen.

Unfortunately with such a backlog it will still take a frustrating amount of time to get through it, but at least it will be a step in the right direction.
