David Cameron visited Calderdale on Friday, January 2, to launch the Conservative election campaign.

I am mentioning this, not in any party political way, but to emphasise what we’ve all known for years; the North matters and achieving growth and ambition in the North are vital to a strong economy, writes Coun Ann McAllister (Con, Rastrick).

My ward colleague, Chris Pillai, took the opportunity to share with Mr Cameron the vibrancy of Calderdale, the talent and diversity of our population, the growing potential in the Lower Valley and what must be done to sustain these.

The council’s priorities for Calderdale for all parties continue to be:

l Growth - promoting enterprise and investment.

l Ambition – raising aspirations for our residents.

l Resilience – supporting personal, community and environmental resilience.

l Sustainability – managing demand and investing for the future.

l Fairness – reducing inequalities and tackling disadvantage.

l Efficiency – identifying inefficiencies and providing services in a more effective way.
