I attended the consultation at Bailiff Bridge Playing Fields where Clifton Rangers outlined their proposals for a clubhouse to replace the old containers currently used for youngsters to change in.
It is fair to say that emotions ran high, voices were raised, but thankfully no actual fisticuffs took place. Bailiff Bridge people are rightfully proud of their achievements in building a sense of community spirit and there is a real feeling of injustice about the way the situation has been handled. There are also real fears about the future availability of this land for community use, and the alleged long term intentions of Clifton Rangers. After the results of the consultation are known it will be time for the council, as landlords, Clifton Rangers, as tenants and community leaders to sit down and thrash out a compromise.
There will inevitably be a compromise, hopefully without recourse to the courts, and as with all such arrangements nobody will get exactly what they want. Cool heads will be needed, let us hope they can be found.
