Former Spen MP Wilf dies aged 91

Former Brighouse and Spen MP Wilf Proudfoot has died at the age of 91.

Mr Proudfoot represented the constituency from 1970-74, after ousting Labour’s Colin Jackson by just 59 votes. He had previously served as Conservative MP for Cleveland from 1959-64.

A colourful character who helped set up Radio 270, a pirate radio station off the east coast at Scarborough, Mr Proudfoot was born in County Durham and became the youngest member of Scarborough Town Council in 1950. He also owned a supermarket chain in Scarborough.

He lost the Brighouse and Spen seat to Colin Jackson in a snap by-election in 1974.He leaves his wife Peggy, to whom he was married for 63 years, three children and five grandchildren.
