Concerns over Aldi traffic problems

As readers may be aware, a few weeks ago Calderdale Council’s Planning Committee decided to permit an application from Aldi to build a supermarket on Birds Royd Lane.

While this development will regenerate a largely disused and ugly site close to the town centre, provide jobs for local people and create additional choice for consumers, I was concerned about the impact of increased traffic throughout parts of the ward and I asked the committee to be mindful of these when making a decision.

In particular, I expressed concerns that the construction of this new store would create a substantial increase in traffic along Woodhouse Lane and throughout the Woodhouse estate in general, as drivers sought to avoid the frequent congestion on the main Huddersfield Road.

Over the coming months, I will be working with my ward colleagues and consulting residents, to consider how we can best manage these traffic and road safety concerns, prior to the construction of the new store.
