TWO Brighouse scouts have been treated to a day at Westminster, London.
Alex Garth, 17, of Holly bank Road, Rastrick, and James Garner, 17, of Stratton Road, Brighouse, of Brighouse Explorer Scouts were guests of the Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow MP and were treated to a day at Westminster under the guidance of Calder Valley MP Craig Whittaker.
The visit was organised by MP members of the Scout Parliamentary Group and Scout Headquarters at Gilwell Park in Essex.
“We met Craig in the Central Lobby and we were taken through the MPs’ terrace alongside the Thames through to the Speaker’s House at the end of the Palace of Westminster for the Speaker’s reception where a buffet was served,” said leader Derek Dodkins, who accompanied the youngsters.
“After the meal there were welcome speeches by MPs from each of the main parties representing the Scout Parliamentary Group. Alex and James also spoke with the three deputy Speakers of the House of Commons and the Chief Commissioner of the UK, Wayne Bulpitt.”
During the tour Mr Whittaker pointed out well-known politicians, took them past the MPs’ library and into the House of Commons visitors’ gallery where they listened to a debate on terrorism in universities led by Home Secretary Teresa May.
“Alex and James were surprised how small the House of Commons Chamber was compared with the rest of the Palace of Westminster,” said Mr Dodkins. “Craig joked that is why he has lost so much weight while serving as Calder Valley’s MP.” He added that Brighouse Explorer Scouts would like to thank Mr Whittaker for taking the time out of his busy schedule and giving three of their members an unforgettable visit to Westminster.
