INDISCRIMINATE parking outside Brighouse schools is causing concern for residents.
One resident who lives close to Brighouse High and St Joseph’s RC Primary School in Finkil Street said that parking outside the two schools was a major problem particularly at peak times.
He told members of Brighouse ward forum that traffic wardens were only outside the school every three weeks and the moment the children spotted them they got on the phone to their parents.
He said that on those days when the traffic wardens were around it was amazing how good the parking was.
Councillor Colin Stout (Ind, Brighouse) said he shared the residents’ concerns.
“Parking outside schools should be stopped. If this issue is brought up at every ward forum then clearly it is time to meet with parents to see what they are in favour of. If it is a concern we could have a joint meeting with parents and officers to see if we have any common ground,” he said.
“It is also a police issue if parents are parking on pavements so perhaps we should invite them along as well so we can explain to people who is responsible for enforcing what.”
Chairman of Brighouse Road Safety Committee, Ann Rutherford, said it is a problem outside of all Calderdale schools.
“I watched one woman who drove 200 yards to drop her child off at a school in Southowram and then turned round and went back home,” she said.
A day of action is being planned in the Rastrick area to target parking outside schools after a successful operation has seen a noticed improvement in the area.
Residents raised their concerns at the Rastrick ward forum about the problems with parking particularly around the Field Top Road area where there are three schools.
