Friends from across the Lower Valley are preparing for a cycle ride to the Isle of Man in memory of a motorbike enthusiast.
A group of 21 friends will set off from Brighouse on September 7 in memory of Christopher Tarran who died of cancer last November and to raise money for two charities in the process of their 185 mile round trip.
Mr Tarran, or Taz as he was known to friends, was from Elland and worked for Leach Colour in Bradley, Huddersfield, and was a keen motorcyclist and loved motorsports.
His friends, mostly all novice cyclists and include Simon Jones from Brighouse, decided to organise a charity ride called ‘TT for Taz’ with all money raised going to his nominated funeral charities, Macmillan Cancer Support and Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
“Taz was a great friend and colleague. Seven of his workmates from Leach Colour quickly accepted the challenge and we’re eager to set off.
“It’s great, the whole company is behind us and we’ve had some incredible donations which makes it all worthwhile,” said Simon.
Dozens of individuals and local companies have already donated products, money or their time to help with the challenge and over £2,000 has already been raised. The challenge has been backed by 12 corporate sponsors and Alistair Bray from Elland based international freight business ‘Europe Now’ are supplying and driving their support vehicle.
The riders, who will head to Heysham before getting a ferry to the Isle of Man and complete a circuit of the TT track, would like to top the £10,000 mark.
“It really is going to be a case of blazing saddles. It’s a mammoth task but we’re all determined to do this for Taz who was a well respected lad and sorely missed. It takes patience, time and teamwork to stage such an event and all the cyclists have really pulled together for these two great charities, and we’ve had fantastic support from friends, families and colleagues. We can’t thank all our sponsors enough,” says Tim Ingram who is Head of Creative at Wright Angle Marketing, Barkisland.
Before and after parties have been organised to raise more funds with the first one taking place at The Booth Wood Inn, Rishworth on August 30 and is sold out.
Pat Whitaker, Taz’s mum added, “Chris’s family would like to thank the cyclists for taking part in this cycle ride, especially Tim, Simon and Paul for bringing everyone together and making this event possible. We wish them every success and thank everyone for their incredible efforts and kind donations.”
The after party at Elland Cricket Club will be held on September 27 and coincide with what would have been Taz’s 54th birthday. Entertainment will come from rock bands ‘MANGE2’ and ‘L.I.P.S.’. Tickets are available from Studio 9 Photography, Elland or from the TT for Taz website.
