A Rastrick man has been awarded the OBE after raising more than £300,000 for local and national charities.

David Armitage of Toothill Court has raised the cash over the last 30 years with the help of his wife Carol under the company banner of Sellers International Ltd in Huddersfield.

Mr Armitage is chair of the company and sponsored both the Sellers International and Youth Brass Bands, Huddersfield Choral Society Youth Choir from its formation as well as the Huddersfield Lawn Tennis Club’s annual open tournament, and the Sellers Junior Cricket League. Through one of the subsidiary companies, he also supported the RCD Huddersfield Junior Football League, in which many Brighouse teams play.

With the brass bands they have organised more than 50 concerts each raising from £2,000 to £32,000 for many different charities including Guide Dogs, Kirkwood and Overgate Hospices, Huddersfield Royal Infirmary Breast Clinic Appeal and Yorkshire Cancer Research. The 69-year-old travelled to Buckingham Palace on Tuesday to collect the award with his wife, son Charles, and daughter Joanne.
