TRIBUTES have been paid to Mr Gordon Kirby, a dedicated charity fund-raiser and tireless member of Brighouse Rotary Club, the RAF Association and St John Ambulance.
Mr Kirby, of Hove Edge, died in Overgate Hospice at the age of 78.
After moving to Brighouse in 2002 with his late wife Pat, Mr Kirby joined Brighouse Rotary Club and RAFA where he applied himself with enthusiasm to fundraising and charity work.
He was a familiar figure at Brighouse Gala time selling tickets from the RAFA caravan in Brighouse town centre and he helped to organise blood pressure checks for St John Ambulance. He was a regular volunteer at Brighouse Rest Centre at Christmas where he helped serve up coffee and mince pies to visitors.
Judith Poole, president of Brighouse Rotary Club, said: “Gordon was very community spirited and a brilliant Rotarian. The amount of community work he did was quite amazing.”
Club press officer Ian Hamer said: “Gordon was a very likeable character and his ability to sell raffle tickets was legendary!”
Rotary members remembered Mr Kirby with a minute’s silence at their meeting on Monday.
Ronnie Mann of the Brighouse branch of RAFA said: “Gordon had been our president for about three years and he will be sadly missed. He worked hard for the branch and was a very reliable volunteer.
“We teased him about his southern origins but he had a great sense of humour and took it all in good part.”
Mr Kirby was born in 1933 and spent his early years in Buckinghamshire. He was passionate about cars and started driving an ambulance at a young age when he became a St John’s cadet in the second world war.
He trained as a motor mechanic, eventually becoming managing director of a car business. His vintage Austin 7 was seen recently at the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Brighouse and the Gala procession where it was driven by Mr Kirby’s daughter Lizzy.
Mr Kirby leaves two daughters, Lizzy Kirby and Patsy Clarke, and two grand-daughters Nicola and Hannah. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 29, at Park Wood Crematorium, Elland, at 11.15am.
