Young scouts invade camp - Viking style
Viking weekend at Bradley Wood Scout Camp. Richard Longbone, 15.
Young scouts lived like ancient warriors for a weekend as group members from the area came together to experience life as a Viking.
Scouts throughout West Yorkshire descended on Bradley Wood Scout Camp on Shepherds Thorn Lane, Brighouse, where they camped and took part in activities that were synonymous with the Vikings.
As well as enjoying their meals around a camp fire, youngsters were shown how to throw axes and took part in a long boat race and archery.
It was the first winter event the camp had organised and resident assistant manager David Gill said it was a great success.
“We had 104 young people attend from all over the north of England with some travelling from as far as Hull and Merseyside,” he said.

“All the activities had a Viking theme such as axe-throwing at a target, field archery and we even had someone dressed as a real Viking in a huge tent with an actual camp fire.
“The event was a complete success and everyone had a ball. It was absolutely brilliant and everyone left with a smile on their face.”
Youngsters aged 10 to 18-years-old arrived on Saturday and camped over to Sunday. They took part in activities from the moment they woke up until they went to sleep.
The camp is hoping to build on the success of this year’s event when they hold future winter camps.

Other events have also been planned throughout the year and will be open to the scouting fraternity and to the general public.
