WIN a trip to Edinburgh on a heritage train

GREEN Trains runs a special heritage train from Brighouse to Edinburgh next month – and you and a friend could be VIP guests.

Event organiser Clive Lord said: "The East Coast Edinburgh Express' on Thursday April 8 travels via Manchester and offers a scenic tour over the wooded Calder Valley line through Hebden Bridge, over the Vale of York, passing the White Horse of Kilburn, Durham Cathedral and the 'Angel of the North'.

"At Newcastle there is a panoramic view along the Tyne. It will then be time to enjoy mile after mile of sea views along the Northumberland Coast, including Lindisfarne (Holy Island) and Bamburgh Castle. We'll cross the magnificent 'Royal Border Bridge' at Berwick-upon-Tweed, and enjoy further views of the North Sea as we enter Scotland.

"We arrive in Edinburgh, one of the world's most attractive capital cities, at lunch-time for a break of around 4 hours. Attractions include the famous Castle with the crown jewels of Scotland and the 'Stone of Destiny.' You could walk the Royal Mile, that leads from the Castle to Holyrood Palace and choose from numerous museums to visit."

Clive added: "Why not take the day off work? It's often nice to visit a big city during the week as it is less crowded."

The train will be operated by Britain's smallest independent train operating company West Coast Railways of Carnforth and will comprise 10 heritage coaches.

"People will be seated in fours around a table with a large picture window, offering superb views of the beautiful scenery," said Clive. "Passengers will have the rare chance to travel back in time on board a locomotive hauled train with coaches built in the 1950s and 1960s.

"For many it will bring back fond memories of British Rail's 'Merrymaker Tours' which provided great days out by excursion train in the 1970s.

"They certainly brought the local community together and were sorely missed when they were stopped."

The train will have a buffet car service on board and all passengers have reserved seats. A travel guide is produced giving a description of the journey and also information about the varied attractions Edinburgh has to offer. Tickets are priced at 49 per person.
