We’re ready to take the plunge

BRIGHOUSE’S new leisure centre is set to make a splash when it opens on Monday – but there are claims its design could mean the council loses vital income.

The £5 million development next to Wellholme Park in Bradford Road includes a 25-metre swimming pool, a 20-metre learner pool, a spacious 65-station gym and a multi-purpose studio.

The centre will also have family and disabled changing rooms and a 57-space car park which includes three disabled spaces.

Matt Brooks, fitness manager at the centre, said he was excited about the opening.

“We have got a gym that competes with any private gym within a 12-mile radius and we have fantastic instructors and equipment,” he said. “We have really tried to provide everything that the customers in Brighouse want.”

He said they had had an excellent working relationship with the contractors who had worked hard to make sure everything went according to plan.

The state-of-the-art facility will employ 30 permanent staff and has created dozens of new jobs for part-time workers.

But criticism has come from Jon Snaith, a swimming teacher with Brighouse Swimming Club, who says that because the 25-metre pool only has five lanes it cannot be used for competitions or galas.

“To be a real competitor when it comes to galas it really should have had six lanes. In addition, there is hardly any room to seat spectators so it makes it difficult to hold galas. I am a bit disappointed,” he said,

“I think the council has missed a trick as they could have charged people to come in and they would have made more money by having a cafe.

“It is a fabulous new home for us, but unfortunately I feel it is lacking in vital areas.”

I remember going to a few public meetings about the pool and Mill Royd street.. The council had the money way back in 1973 for a pool. Also I remember Councillor Rogan saying that some money had been taken out of the pool funds last year. Our MP was one of the councillors who voted for this. I agree, a cafe would have been nice but at least we have a new facility that we can all use.

A cafe was the obviouse must have council planners mist a good earner for this site or did the brass run out.
