Volunteers needed for Poppy Appeal
A PLEA has been made for people to support the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.
Services will be held throughout the Brighouse area and organiser Keith Iles said it was important that people supported them.
A memorial service and wreath-laying ceremony will take place on Friday, November 9, for pupils at St John’s Academy, Clifton. The service in the memorial park in Towngate will be led by Rev Stephen Spencer.
On November 10, at 11am, wreaths and crosses will be laid in the Royal British Legion Garden of Remembrance, Thornton Square, Brighouse.
A memorial and wreath-laying ceremony will take place on Sunday at Bailiff Bridge Memorial Gardens in Victoria Road. People are asked to meet at 10.30am for a 10.45am start. Taking part in the service will Rev Steph Jenner, Rev Kathryn Buck, Neil Davidson, deputy Lieutenant for West Yorkshire, representatives from the council and Bailiff Bridge Primary, Lightcliffe Primary Cliffe Hill Community Primary and Hipperholme and Lightcliffe High Schools. There will be a procession from the community centre at 10.30am by the scouts, clubs, brownies and rainbows.
A service will be held at the war memorial at The Stray in Wakefield Road, Lightcliffe, at 12.15pm.
St Matthew’s Church, Rastrick, will begin their service at 10am on Sunday, November 11. There will be a procession to Rastrick Library where there will be an act of remembrance of wreath laying at 11am.
The Mayor of Calderdale, Councillor John Hardy and his wife Janet, are hoping to be in attendance at the service at Brighouse Parish Church on Sunday meeting from 2pm. Wreaths will be laid at the cenotaph in Rydings Park, Brighouse.
Collection boxes are available from Brighouse Rest Centre from 1pm on November 9 and from 8am the following day.
Mr Iles said they were desperate for volunteers. “We also desperately need new members of the Royal British Legion because we have lost so many over the years. We are getting to the critical stage and we need help,” he said.
