Tributes paid to scouting stalwart

MEMBERS of the scouting organisation joined family and friends for a service of thanskgiving for Mr Peter Buck at Central Methodist Church, Brighouse.

Mr Buck, who was Brighouse District Commissioner in the 1970s and 1980s, died at his home in Brighouse. He was 71.

During his involvement with the scouts Mr Buck was a member of the Brighouse and District Scout Fellowship, he worked at the West Yorkshire County Camp site at Bradley Wood, he helped with the Rover Crew, well known as the Brigantes and he was actively involved with the Radio Jamboree which made contact with people worldwide. He also wrote a scouting column for the Echo.

He was not a member of the organisation as a child but became involved at 19 when a friend persuaded him to help out with a group in Brighouse.

President of Brighouse Scouts, Mr Allan Dowson, described Mr Buck as a valued member of the organisation: "He ensured boys were taught how to behave properly and was well-known in the scouting organisation throughout West Yorkshire."

He attended the service along with the district chairman John Bradley, former district commissioners, leaders and other former colleagues.

A former pupil at Hipperholme Grammar School, Mr Buck, worked in the treasurer's department of the former Brighouse Town Council until 1967 when he moved to the former Mirfield Urban District Council as rating officer. He joined Kirklees staff in Huddersfield in 1974 where he worked as a senior revenue officer.

As well as his interest in scouting Mr Buck enjoyed music and in his younger days was a member of a skiffle group. He sang with the former Blakeborough's Male Voice Choir and Colne Valley Male Voice Choir who he sang with at the Royal Albert Hall in London. He also sang on occasions with the choir at Central, he helped with the production of the church magazine and edited the church's annual review. Until recently he was booking officer at the church.

His wife Maureen died four years ago. Mr Buck leaves two daughters Alison and Susan and grandchildren Lucy, Abigail, Naomi, Reuben and Toby.
