Trade unions lead cuts protest
Hundreds of people are set to join a rally next month to protest at Government cuts to public services and jobs.
Representatives from six unions were spreading the word in Brighouse last week to let people know about the rally planned for The Piece Hall, Halifax, on Saturday, February 2.
There will be a range of speakers including Halifax MP Linda Riordan, and a speaker from Remploy.
The rally aims to send a clear message to the Government and to councils that public sector cuts are devastating northern towns.
Giving up time from their lunch break, representatives from the GMB, Unison, CYWU, ATL, NASUWT and NUT handed out leaflets in Commercial Street, Brighouse.
Sue McMahon, Calderdale NUT divisional secretary said: “We have had a positive reception from people in Brighouse because they are really concerned about the cuts and the impact it is having on the most vulnerable.”
She added: “The rally will focus on the price that northern towns are paying for austerity, cuts are now biting, austerity is not a choice up north, and it can only get worse.
“We have had services absolutely decimated by the Government which is inflicting death by a thousand cuts on northern towns. It’s time to call a halt and invest in a future for all our children and protect the vulnerable in our society.”
The march will begin from Halifax Town Hall car park at 10.30am and the rally at Halifax Piece Hall will start at 11am.
