Town set to travel back in time to visit the 1940s

BRIGHOUSE is to be transformed into a wartime town as the clock is turned back to the 1940s.

On Saturday and Sunday, June 1 and 2, there will be vintage displays from the British Army, Royal Navy, RAF pilots through to French Resistance, a Luftwaffe bomber pilot display, Luftwaffe Field Division, and much more.

There will be vintage vehicles and military vehicles on display and live music throughout the weekend.

The Civic Hall in Bradford Road will be converted into a cinema showing the old news reels to really take people back in time and on Saturday night there will be a 1940s dance at the Ritz Ballroom.

One of the organisers Lesley Adams said the plans had snowballed since she announced it at the weekend. “Everybody enjoyed the Diamond Jubilee street party last year and loved getting dressed up so much that we decided to do a 1940s weekend,” she said. “The plans are still at an early stage but it is developing all the time and since I put the announcement out on social networking site Facebook and Twitter the response has snowballed.

“I was very surprised by the reaction and it just went mental. People that don’t even know where Brighouse is want to come and have been asking where the nearest hotels are so they can stop over.”

There will be a vintage market during the weekend, similar to the street markets, but along one street so that there is plenty of room for the displays.

“We have got lots planned so I hope people will attend. Plenty of people seem to be looking forward to it and are very excited about it,” said Lesley. “If anyone does have any vintage cars and would like to attend if they could get in touch and anyone else who would like to get involved in the weekend I would love to hear from them. Just call me at Simply Flowers on 01484 400664 or email lesley@simplyflowers”

The weekend is being organised by members of Brighouse Business Initiative who are responsible for the Christmas light switch on that was hailed a huge success and the street markets which are attended by hundreds of people from throughout Yorkshire.
