Michael Gove’s departure as Education Secretary has been welcome by the regional head of a teaching union.

Mr Gove, who has become minister for television, has been replaced in education by Nicky Morgan.

And that move has been welcomed by Ian Stevenson, regional secretary of the National Union of Teachers for the Yorkshire Midland Region, who said he hoped there would be a more “conciliatory and constructive approach from Nicky Morgan”.

“Michael Gove has gone because he lost the support of the profession and parents,” said Stevenson.

“His education reforms have by many been considered wrong headed, including the failed free schools programme, the use of unqualified teachers and ill-thought out reforms to examinations.

“We hope to be able to look forward to a more conciliatory and constructive approach from Nicky Morgan, the new Secretary of State of the Department for Education.”
