BIG-hearted members of a Brighouse support group have donated £1,000 to an appeal to help people in Calderdale with cardiac problems.

Pauline Darnborough, social secretary of Heartbeat, handed over a cheque to Sue Green, regional volunteer fundraising manager for the British Heart Foundation.

The money will go to the Mending Broken Hearts appeal which aims to improve the quality of life and life expectancy for Calderdale people who are at risk of having a heart attack.

February is National Heart Month and the BHF is urging people to join in National Wear Red Day on Friday, February 24 to help raise vital funds.

Sue said: “Our figures show that every year more than 68,499 men and women in England lose their lives to heart disease. In Calderdale the figure is 266 and in Kirklees it is 582.

“Cardiovascular disease can affect anyone, young and old, and we are working to ensure that conditions such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol can one day be eliminated.”

At Heartbeat’s annual meeting, membership secretary Trevor Trott said the group had grown by more than 80 to 287 last year and another ten new members had already signed up in January.

There had been 7,394 attendances at events and classes in 2011. Treasurer Barrie Kitchen said that, although 2011 was a financially difficult year for many organisations, Heartbeat had doubled its turnover and recorded a profit.
