Students’ tribute to former headmaster and hero

Students from Hipperholme Grammar School have visited the Colne Valley British War Cemetery at Ypres to mark the centenerary of the outbreak of the First World War.

Students from Hipperholme Grammar School have visited the Colne Valley British War Cemetery at Ypres to mark the centenerary of the outbreak of the First World War.

Students paid tribute to a former headmaster of Hipperholme Grammar School who died saving the lives of others during World War One.

In 1914, Captain Maynard Percy Andrews left his job at the school and travelled to Belgium to join his comrades in the trenches near Ypres.

A century later, a group of senior school students and staff visited the Colne Valley British War Cemetery in Boerzinge, Ypres, where the former headmaster is buried.

At the cemetery, which is named after one of the trenches dug by the Yorkshire Regiment in 1915, current headteacher Jack Williams led a short ceremony of remembrance which was relayed live via satellite back to the school in Hipperholme so that all the pupils and staff could be involved.

Head girl Marianne Suddards laid a wreath on behalf of the pupils and Amelia Carroll read ‘In Flanders Fields’, written by Captain John McCrae in the Ypres Field Hospital only three miles away from the cemetery.

Members of the school choir sang ‘Silent Night’ in memory of the soldiers who crossed ‘no man’s land’ in Christmas 1914 and the ceremony was filmed by sixth form student Stephanie Teal and the signal sent back over 400 miles to Hipperholme.

The group then went on to Ypres to visit the Menin Gate and the Langemark military memorial.

The tour also included an opportunity to take in the rich culture and traditions of Bruges and Ostend.

Year 10 pupil Kiera Stansell said: “The remembrance ceremony was very moving and put many of the freedoms we take for granted into perspective.

“The fact that we could share it all with fellow pupils back home made it even more special”.
