Students at Rastrick High School and the Holiday Inn, Clifton, have come together to provide a fantastic meal to Brighouse businesses.

Six students studying the level three Btec hospitality course at Rastrick High School Sixth Form College designed and prepared two of the courses that were served to around 160 people at the Brighouse Echo Business Awards.

This is the first time this has been done and it is hoped they will be able to integrate it into the course.

The students prepared the smoked fish platter and mixed berry cheesecake served with port syrup as well as serving them and clearing up.

Tania Fares who runs the course with Jackie Ward, said: “It is a new initiative that has been set up between the college and the Holiday Inn so that what they have learnt at college is put into context, giving them a real life scenario to work in and giving them core skills in the industry.”

She said two of the students in particular did a fantastic job, Lauren Whitehead and Cherie Patterson, who were involved the whole day preparing the food. “I think the Holiday Inn were really impressed and Clare Frisby,” she said.

It is hoped that the students studying level 2 Btec hospitality will start to use silver service in their cafe on the site at school to create a real working environment.

General manager at the Holiday Inn, Louise Dodd, said the students did a fantastic job. “The two girls in particular who did the preparation side and serving, certainly rose to the challenge. They were all very enthusiastic about having time in a real life business and being allowed to get involved in what we do.

“I don’t think they were expecting the recognition they were given on the night. They worked really well with our team and we are wanting to build this into the curriculum next year on a more formal basis.”
