Student scoops sports honour

A STUDENT care worker at a Rastrick school has won a prestigious award for her contribution to PE and sport in her school and community.

Billie-Lou Lowson, who works as a part-time relief worker at Highbury School, won the Youth Sport Trust’s Innovation award, where the ceremony recognises and rewards achievements through PE and sport by schools, colleges and young people.

She said: “It feels fantastic to win the Young Person Award and a real privilege when you see the people that I’m surrounded by.

“It feels so special to be able to accept the award, the evening was such a great experience.”

The Brooksbank school student, received the award for the huge amount of time she has committed to supporting activities in her school and community, including countless hours of volunteering at sports festivals, coaching programmes and supporting staff at Highbury with activities and trips.

Judges praised her passion to support the school and determination to share the difficulties they face to students in her own school, by leading assemblies to incite other students to contribute to the charitable work.

Her fund raising efforts, which included a sponsored walk with wheel-chaired pupils at Highbury from Sowerby Bridge to Hebden Bridge last year, were also commended and raising over £4,000 for schools, local hospice and a children’s ward in a hospital.

Olympic sprinter Jason Gardener and Chair of the Youth Sport Trust, Sue Campbell, presented Billie-Lou with her award.

The Elland school will now receive a visit from Olympic sprinter Darren Campbell.

The event was one of the highlights of the Youth Sport Trust’s Conference 2012, exploring how schools can drive educational achievement through PE and sport.

Workshops, seminars and networking opportunities were held that allowed schools to share ideas and innovations on how sport can be used right across the curriculum to improve attainment and achievement.
