‘Stop speeding on our estate’ say residents
Residents at Whinney Hill Park Estate, Brighouse, who are concerned about the speed of traffic.
POLICE action could be taken after motorists were found to be exceeding the speed limit by more than 10mph.
Results collected by Calderdale Council have found that motorists are travelling as fast as 41mph around the Whinney Hill Park estate in Brighouse which has a speed limit of 30mph.
The Speed Indication Device between 8.30am and 9.30am on December 18 found the average speed to be 33mph in the direction of Whinney Hill and the maximum was 41mph. Going in the opposite direction the average speed was 31mph and 39mph was the maximum speed recorded.
Police enforcement is now recommended.
Residents have already handed in a petition containing hundreds of signatures to Calderdale Council in a bid to lower the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph.
Chair of the residents group Les Riach said: “It is ridiculous. We have known this for years that people are speeding. At one of our meetings just before Christmas one of the police officers told us that they had stopped the same person three times for going over the speed limit on the estate.
“People are using it as a race track especially the top and bottom roads. They are driving like lunatics and putting people’s lives at risk. There are lots of young children around at the time the checks were carried out who travel to school through the estate. And if one of them was hit by a car travelling at speed they would stand no chance of getting out of the way.”
Councillor Scott Benton (Con, Brighouse) said: “The results from the mobile speed camera show that motorists are consistently speeding around the estate and that both further deployment of this camera and appropriate enforcement action from the Police are urgently required. The petition I recently handed to the Council highlighted the concerns of residents with relation to speeding vehicles and I will continue to work with the residents to campaign for improvements in road safety around the estate.”
Councillor Colin Stout (Ind, Brighouse) said they needed to take action and found the speed people were travelling at was particularly worrying.
