Sport's elite promise a stunning spectacle
BRIGHOUSE is under starter's orders for an evening of entertainment and top sporting action as the nation's best cyclists prepare to take to the streets of the town on Tuesday.
The prestigious Brighouse Circuit races, which are now part of the British Cycling Elite Circuit Series, promise to be a thrilling spectacle and the organisers are keeping their fingers crossed for fine weather and lots of support from spectators and traders in the town centre.
The event was held for the first time in 2007 and was watched by more than 2,000 people.
It was such a success that it was adopted by the sport's governing body after just one year to form part of the elite series and is now set to become an annual event.
Michael Lever, who organises the event with fellow cyclists Paul Waddington and Chris Vokes, said: "This event really put Brighouse on the cycling map. We are thrilled by its success. Some of the best riders in Britain will be taking part and many of them are at the top of their game."
Full story and pictures in today's Brighouse Echo Road closure notices are in place around Brighouse town centre and traffic will be diverted away from the route from 6pm on Tuesday.
The organisers have been able to confirm the support of Calderdale Council, Dews Motor Group as the main sponsor, with Hart and Clough again providing the print for the event programmes. The commentator on the night will be Eurosport cycling expert Mike Smith.
Many of the town’s restaurants, cafes, shops and takeaways are expected to be open throughout the evening. Mr Lever said: “We are hoping for good support from the people and traders of Brighouse. There is a fantastic amount of interest in cycling and it is great to see the town hosting an event like this.
“The riders will be going past at speeds up to 40mph, especially in the long stretches along Commercial Street, and there are a couple of very tight corners. The event will be a real showcase of sporting excellence.”
