Sister act takes over Black Bull

Gail Foster and Martin Jackson

THE new manager at the Black Bull, Gail Foster, and her partner Martin Jackson, are settling in and have plenty of plans for the year ahead.

Originally from Keighley, Gail has experience in the retail trade and of running pubs while Martin was formerly a postman.

It was through her sister Karen Ward, former manager of the Martins Nest in Bradford Road, that Gail now finds herself at the helm of the historic Black Bull.

Karen now oversees two pubs on behalf of Enterprise - the Black Bull and the Royal Oak at Haworth - as well as running her own pub, The Flappit at Cullingworth.

When she realised the Black Bull was available and in need of a manager, Karen thought it would be the perfect opportunity for her sister.

“I hadn’t seen the pub when Karen asked me if I wanted to manage it but I liked what I saw when I came. I thought the pub was lovely and just needed some TLC.”

Since taking over, Martin and Gail have been hard at work refurbishing the bedrooms and bathrooms, ready to start bed and breakfast again, and a new kitchen has been installed.

“The customers have been fantastic,” said Gail. “They have been so helpful and welcoming - all they want is consistency.”

The pub is serving up low-priced beers and daytime and early evening trade is already busy.

Live music went down well last Saturday and female vocalist Hayley will provide the entertainment on December 10.

Gail plans more live music in the New Year as well as early opening to serve up breakfasts.
