Seniors step in to tap troubles away

TAP dancing senior citizens are ready to step in and perform a dance routine if bad weather prevents dancers travelling to the 14th Roy's Relay Tapathon on Sunday.

Plans are for dance schools from the Brighouse, Halifax, Huddersfield and Bradford areas to dance non-stop from 10am through to almost 4pm and raise money for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

But if the bad weather means that some of the dancers cannot get to North Bridge Leisure Centre in Halifax, organisers of the event, Derek Hamer and his wife Vera, of Brighouse, Derek's sister Connie Womersley, of Lower Wyke and Vera Kerridge, of Sowerby, will have their tap shoes ready.

They are all pensioners and Derek and his sister are both in their 80s.

"We hope to have a full programme of non-stop dancing but we will be prepared in case we need to step in," said Derek.

"Other dance schools taking part are always ready to help out as well."

Two dance schools from the Huddersfield area, the Huddersfield School of Theatre Dance and Bernadette Heys School of Theatre Dance in Marsden have warned they might have difficulties travelling because of the weather.

"But we know they will do their best to join us," said Mr Hamer, who used to appear in concert parties at Sunny Vale, Hipperholme, with the late entertainer Roy Castle.

Hundreds of dancers from 18 dance schools are lined up and each school will perform a 20-minute routine.

Janet Austin Tappers, from Brighouse, and the Elwyn School of Dance, Brighouse, are among those taking part.

Last year's event raised 17,600and since the first event was held 162,000 has been raised for the charity.

Dance schools lined up to take part include Gainsborough Stage School, Bradford, Karen Binns Stage School, Elland, Katie Philpott School of Dance, Mirfield, Elwyn School of Dance, Brighouse, Dance 4 All, Halifax, Janet Austin Tappers, Brighouse, Innovation Arena Performing Arts Centre, Holywell Green, Pam Strickland Tappers and The Strickland and Cook Theatre School, Halifax, Huddersfield School of Theatre Dance, North Bridge Leisure Centre Tappers, Halifax, Donna Clare School of Dance, Huddersfield, Whiteley's Academy of Performing Arts, Halifax, Janet Austin Tappers, Huddersfield, Bernadette Heys School of Theatre Dance, Marsden, Baby Ballet Song and Dance Academy, Halifax, Barbara Peters School of Dance, Huddersfield, Clayton Tappers, Bradford and Hoofers' Dance Studio, Ripponden.
