Councillors have appealed to motorists to avoid using an access-only route after road safety concerns have been expressed by residents in the area.

Residents on Brighouse Wood Lane and Elland Road have contacted councillors after a number of “near-misses” whereby motorists using Brighouse Wood Lane, an access-only route for residents linking Elland Road with Halifax Road, have reportedly been close to injuring pedestrians.

Coun Scott Benton said: “The nature of the road means that it is not suitable for general traffic.

“Due to the speed of vehicles using the road, residents in the area are very concerned that it is only a matter of time before an accident occurs.

“We are working with the police to deter motorists from using this road and I understand that the police will now be conducting regular checks to ensure that usage is limited to residents only.”

Coun Howard Blagbrough said the cobbled road surface is deteriorating.

“We would appeal to motorists not to use the road as a short cut,” he said.
