AFTER more than 100 years Ebenezer Methodist Church in Bailiff Bridge has closed its doors.

A packed congregation gathered for a weekend of special events to mark the church’s history, before a final service at the Bradford Road building.

The decision to close the church was taken earlier this year when it was regretfully accepted that, despite being well-used by community groups in the area, the cost and effort of running the building had become too much. A dwindling church congregation had also contributed to the decision.

The Rev Stephanie Jenner, Minister of Ebenezer, said: “Rather than waiting for numbers to decline further we decided to go out on a positive note. The final weekend celebrated the people and the witness of the church and it also signified a move forward.

“The congregation members are settling into their new churches and the building will remain in community use until December.”

The final weekend was marked with a fish and chip supper, Sunday lunch and an afternoon of hymn singing when members of the Ebenezer congregation were joined by worshippers from Clifton and Central Methodist Churches.
