Roadworks relief for Bank Holiday

Hundreds of miles of roadworks will be lifted on the region's motorways and major roads to ease congestion during the Bank Holiday.

Highways England is suspending nearly 600 miles of roadworks from Friday, May 27 to leave 97 per cent of its road network free over the weekend.

In Yorkshire and the North East, the organisation is lifting 17 sets of roadworks, and has also completed 23 sets ahead of the break.

Just eight sets of roadworks will remain over the weekend.

Roads Minister Andrew Jones said: “We are delivering the biggest improvement to roads since the 1970s to improve journeys for drivers in the busiest periods and to create new capacity.

“We do not want work to stand in the way of families during their bank holiday getaway, so I am pleased roadworks are being removed at so many locations.”

Roadworks to be lifted include bridge works and a boundary fence renewal scheme at the M62 junction 33 to junction 34, near Pontefract.
