Reunion tinged with sadness: 'Rona would've wanted it to go ahead'

A REUNION being held next month for students of the former Brighouse Girls' Grammar School will be tinged with sadness.

One of the organisers of the event, Mrs Rona Redfearn, died on Monday aged 71.

"Many people will be shocked when they hear what has happened," said Mrs Julia Wilby, who worked with Mrs Redfearn to plan the event. "She will be well remembered and missed by many of the old girls."

The get-together, which is being held on March 11 at the Auctioneer Restaurant in Brighouse, will go ahead as planned. "We know that is what Rona would have wanted and her family has said the same," said Mrs Wilby, who had known Mrs Redfearn since their school days.

"She was in the year above me and had been involved with organising reunions for many years, initially with just a small group meeting at pubs and more recently with the events at the Auctioneer," said Mrs Wilby.

This year's reunion marks the 100th anniversary since the original school building in Halifax Road – now used by sixth form students – opened as a school.

The event has proved very popular and is oversubscribed with 150 people attending. Other names have been added to a waiting list.

A book of memories has been compiled for the occasion including old photographs and other items of memorabilia. Former student Margaret Hulmes (formerly Thompson) has collated information for the book which is called 'Down the Years', It will be for sale at the reunion and will also be available on Wednesday March 24, when former students have the chance to look round the school building in Halifax Road.

Arrangements have been made with the head teacher at Brighouse High, Mrs Liz Cresswell for the sixth form centre to be open and anyone interested can look round the building from 2pm.

The former grammar school opened on March 10, 1910 and each year the reunion is held as close as possible to the original opening date and Founders' Day is celebrated The old school song, 'Down The Years Our Song Shall Ring' will be printed on place mats and sung during the evening.
