Resurfacing for notorious hill

ACTION could be taken to improve Brookfoot Lane.
The condition of the road surface going up and down the notorious hill has been debated on a number of occasions especially by members of Brighouse Road Safety Committee which believe the road is “not fit for purpose”.
A series of accidents have also added weight to the argument that action needs to be taken to address the concerns of its members.
“Only last month a car overturned on its roof,” said vice-chair Pat Oates. “And a Marshalls van had to go back down the hill to get traction to get up it. You do wonder if this road is fit for purpose.”
A spokesman for Calderdale Council has confirmed that Brookfoot Lane is subject to an annual skid resistance survey and this year the survey identified the need for an engineer site investigation.
“An investigation has been carried out and it is proposed that the road surface of Brookfoot Lane will be mechanically retextured in 2012/13,” he said.
The road safety watchdog has raised its concerns with Calderdale Council about the road’s condition after reports of heavy goods vehicles, which use the road on a regular basis, not being able to get traction up the road.
“The council is designing a minor traffic scheme that will improve priorities for uphill bound traffic and should assist traction for HGVs travelling uphill,” the council spokesman added.
An accident last month raised great concern for the committee after a woman in her mid-40s had to be freed from her car after it overturned onto its roof.
During the accident, where the car had flipped on its roof close to the three houses at the top of the short hill, the woman was admitted to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary with suspected spinal and head injuries but was later discharged.
A police spokesman said it was not believed the car was involved with any other vehicles and may have skidded on a slippy road surface.
But because the accident was not serious no further investigation was needed.
